Recently I had the honor of photographing some senior pictures for a good friends daughter back in Portland. All the cities I have ever lived in I know very well. I’m an explorer and always search out new and interesting areas. But back when I lived in Portland I wasn’t photographing portraits, so I didn’t really have any go-to locations. I know what type of backdrops I like to use for shoots, so I had a general idea of where I wanted go but when I get the opportunity to explore and create in a new environment, I get excited and a anxious all at the same time. Remember, in an outdoor setting, it’s a race against the clock and the sun. Choosing the right location for the right time is something that you get better at with time and experience, but sometimes, all those choices can still make me a little anxious. You just never know if your going to eat up a bunch of time running around trying scout out what your looking for. I basically had the entire downtown city of Portland to work with, and three hours to do it. Yeah, it was a like a scavenger hunt. I had to find the locations, create the portraits, and then run off to find the next one I was looking for. Luckily with this shoot though, my choices just synced up with everything else and it turned out even better than I was hoping for. Summer has great style, the weather was fantastic that day for pictures, and the places I chose to shoot at just really worked out. Whewww- I couldn’t be happier!
